Worst Dressed at Oscars 2018

Covering every inch of her body, Maya struck out in a high-necked red dress. The Bridesmaids actor decided to ‘stay classy’ and not flash the flesh but let’s be honest here, Maya’s baggy dress looked nothing less than an extension of the red carpet itself.

The slicked down hair and orange toned makeup only made matters worse, and I’m not really sure what those earrings are doing there. This unusual attire was definitely not fit for one of the biggest awards nights in Hollywood, especially when the actor was hosting. I doubt she’ll be able to live this Oscars gaffe down.

The How To Get Away With Murderstar failed to impress this year with her daring dress. Donning a hot pink Michael Kors number, Viola’s outfit choice served as more of an eye sore than a style statement.


The loose fit failed to flatter the actor’s toned body and the clutch was way too matchy-matchy. To top it off, Viola decided to go for flashy silver jewellery. An already in-your-face outfit would have looked ‘better’ (for lack of a better word) with toned down accessories but for some reason, it seems like the star was really feeling those blingy hoops. Oh, and let’s just not speak of the hair and makeup.

Had Viola let her dress do all the talking and kept everything else to a minimum, I might have reconsidered labelling her as one of the worst.

The singer and actress wore the sort of dress you would flick right over if you were rummaging the back room sale rack at a formal store, thinking it was a second from someone’s Year 11 dance.

We love singer Andra Day’s confidence - it’s just her poufy, froufy dress we’re not so sure about.

Actress Blanca Blanco, who wore easily the most revealing dress at the Golden Globes earlier this year and suffered a wardrobe malfunction at last year’s Oscars, again flashed the flesh with this plunging neckline.

Holy moly. This is what happens when a modern star is inspired to dress like a suburban mother-of-the-bride or an extra from the fancy restaurant scenes in the upper decks on Titanic.

It’s as if Whoopi was rummaging in the dress up box from a down-on-its-luck medieval pantomime then decided to get a boss hairdo to modernise it. Having said that, we love a strong look.

Yes, the authentic Eritrean regal look was a nod to a wish from her late father, but the bottom line for the Girls’ Trip star is the Oscars is an awards ceremony. Not a costume party.

Indie singer St. Vincent, who will appear on stage performing Oscar-nominated Call Me By Your Name song Mystery of Love with Sufjan Stevens, brought art-rock quirk to the red carpet.

At least you could smuggle in a few drinks under that sleeve

Salma’s custom embellished Gucci dress was the definition of a fashion disaster. The matronly shade, unfathomable neckpiece, confusing silhouette, layered ruffles and overload of sequins was all wrong. Surely a beauty like Salma doesn’t need all this bling?

The Beatriz at Dinner actor rounded off her look with an old-fashioned metallic clutch and dark lip (which, by the way, is a completely different shade of purple) and was a big no no. The only thing the star got remotely right was the hair and minimal jewellery but alas, it could not serve as her saving grace. There was just way too much going on here and she really needs to remember that sometimes, less is more.
